How to Read Hangul in Just One Day? Learn ONLINE with The Language SKOOL

Does studying Korean sound interesting to you, but challenging at the same time? Don’t worry. Hangul, the Korean alphabet, is one of the easiest writing systems to learn. In fact, with the right technique, it can be made accessible to read Hangul within a day! So, we are going to break it down into simple steps:

Step 1: Understand Hangul’s Structure

Unlike English, which uses a mix of letters to form words, Hangul is a phonetic alphabet—each symbol represents a sound. It consists of:

✅ 14 basic consonants
✅ 10 basic vowels
✅ Syllable blocks that combine them

Each Hangul character is made up of a consonant + vowel (+ sometimes another consonant).

For example:

  • 한 (Han) = ㅎ (h) + ㅏ (a) + ㄴ (n)

  • 글 (Gul) = ㄱ (g) + ㅡ (eu) + ㄹ (l)

Step 2: Learn the Consonants

Here are the basic Hangul consonants with their sounds:
ㅂ (b), ㅈ (j), ㄷ (d), ㄱ (g/k), ㅅ (s), ㅁ (m), ㄴ (n), ㅎ (h), ㄹ (r/l), ㅋ (k), ㅌ (t), ㅊ (ch), ㅍ (p)

Easy tip: Some of these look like they sound!

  • ㅁ looks like a mouth (m)

  • ㄴ looks like an "n"

Step 3: Learn the Vowels ????

There are 10 basic vowels in Hangul:

ㅏ (a), ㅑ (ya), ㅓ (eo), ㅕ (yeo), ㅗ (o), ㅛ (yo), ㅜ (u), ㅠ (yu), ㅡ (eu), ㅣ (i)

A simple trick:

  • Vertical vowels (ㅣ, ㅏ, ㅓ) go next to consonants

  • Horizontal vowels (ㅡ, ㅗ, ㅜ) go below consonants

Step 4: Put Them Together ????️

Now, let’s make simple syllables!

  • 가 (ga) = ㄱ (g) + ㅏ (a)

  • 나 (na) = ㄴ (n) + ㅏ (a)

  • 모 (mo) = ㅁ (m) + ㅗ (o)

Congrats! You’re already reading Hangul! ????

Step 5: Practice with Common Words ????

Try reading these easy Korean words:

  • 안녕 (Annyeong) = Hello

  • 사랑 (Sarang) = Love

  • 감사 (Gamsa) = Thanks

With just a little practice, you’ll be reading Korean in no time. Hangul is simple, logical, and fun! Keep practicing, and soon, you’ll be ready to dive into the Korean language like a pro.
